On the occasion of World Environment Day, Vedanta Ltd announced a significant milestone in its clean energy transition.
The Indian mining and metals giant has scaled up its renewable energy capacity to 1.03 gigawatts (GW) through power delivery agreements.
The company remains on track to achieve its target of 2.5 GW of clean energy by 2030.
The company reiterated its long-term commitment to sustainability by setting a goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier.
The 1.03 GW of renewable power capacity is expected to help the company offset over 6 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, comparable to the carbon sequestration of nearly 350 million trees each year.
Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, is spearheading several initiatives to lower its environmental footprint.
As part of a long-term partnership with Serentica Renewables, the company will source 1,335 megawatts (MW) of renewable power for its operations in Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
This move supports Vedanta Aluminium’s goal of sourcing 30% of its total energy needs from renewables by 2030, a key step toward its broader net-zero commitment.
Beyond power generation, Vedanta Aluminium is also working to decarbonise its mobility and logistics operations.
The company has pledged to convert 100% of its light motor vehicle fleet to electric by 2030.
In a pioneering move, it has deployed India’s first 10-tonne electric forklift and currently operates the country’s largest fleet of electric lithium-ion forklifts at its Jharsuguda facility.
To further cut emissions, Vedanta is conducting pilot projects using biodiesel in its commercial vehicles.
