PM Modi Calls World Yogasana Championship A ‘Double Dose’ Of Health And Wellness

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday described the inaugural World Yogasana Championship as a ‘double dose’ of health and wellness, highlighting its significance ahead of International Yoga Day on June 21.

Prime Minister Modi addressed participants virtually at the opening ceremony in Ahmedabad. He said the championship marked a new chapter in global sports and highlighted yoga’s growing international popularity

“World Yoga Day will be celebrated on June 21. On that day, yoga-related events will be held in different countries around the world, and the main programme will take place in Kolkata. Before World Yoga Day, the World Yogasana Championship has arrived with a double dose of health and wellness,” he said.

The championship is taking place in Ahmedabad from June 4 to 8. The championship marks the first international competition devoted entirely to Yogasana as a competitive discipline.

More than 400 athletes representing over 60 countries are participating in the event.

Gujarat is hosting the championship with support from national yoga and sports organisations.

PM Modi noted that yoga has become an essential part of daily life for millions worldwide. He said increasing numbers of people now incorporate meditation and pranayama into their routines to enhance physical and mental well-being.

Referring to this year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, the Prime Minister said people worldwide want to stay active and healthy for longer. He emphasised that yoga offers an accessible and practical solution.

“Yoga is a very suitable option for this. Yoga frees people from indulgence and also from disease. Most importantly, it is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a minimum budget,” he said.

PM Modi encouraged people to practise yoga regularly to improve overall health. He also said participants had already become part of a historic occasion that would inspire young people worldwide through their discipline, dedication, and talent.

Organisers regard the championship as a major step towards establishing Yogasana as a structured international sport while preserving its wellness benefits.
