Continuing a tradition he has followed for several years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke protocol after the conclusion of the 77th Republic Day celebrations by walking along Kartavya Path in New Delhi. He moved through the ceremonial avenue, warmly acknowledging people seated in the enclosures on both sides.
The Prime Minister’s gesture triggered loud applause and cheers from the crowd. Many attendees waved the national flag and raised patriotic slogans such as ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’, while children stood on chairs to catch a better view, their faces lit up with excitement.
After interacting with the crowd on foot, PM Modi entered his vehicle and continued waving to citizens, who responded enthusiastically with chants of ‘Modi-Modi’. He also crossed to the other side of Kartavya Path to greet more spectators, allowing them to capture the moment in photographs.
Adding to the visual appeal of the occasion, the Prime Minister wore a distinctive red tie-and-dye turban embellished with golden peacock feather designs, reinforcing his tradition of sporting unique headgear on Republic Day. He has been stepping out of protocol in this manner consistently since 2015.
National Celebrations and Distinguished Guests
President Droupadi Murmu led the national celebrations by unfurling the Tricolour and marking the historic occasion. The ceremony included the playing of the National Anthem, followed by a ceremonial 21-gun salute carried out using indigenous 105-mm Light Field Guns.
The event was attended by European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who were present as Chief Guests and witnessed the grandeur of India’s Republic Day celebrations.
A major highlight of the parade was Operation Sindoor, which demonstrated India’s coordinated military power. Indian Air Force helicopters carrying the Operation Sindoor flag created a striking visual, honouring India’s decisive action against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir last year.
The Tri-Services tableau, titled ‘Operation Sindoor: Victory Through Jointness’, showcased the integrated strength of the Army, Navy and Air Force.
The display also featured the Integrated Operational Centre, illustrating how strong leadership, seamless coordination and advanced defence systems such as BRAHMOS, Akash and the S-400 air defence network contributed to the mission’s success under the ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ concept.
