Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed profound grief over the fatal fire at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, and announced financial assistance for the affected families through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

Taking to X, the Prime Minister’s Office said the incident was deeply painful and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

“The mishap at a hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, is deeply painful. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” the post said.

It further added, “An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM @narendramodi.”

Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited the hospital to review the situation and meet the injured patients undergoing treatment.

The Chief Minister announced financial assistance of ₹25 lakh for the family of each deceased patient from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and ordered a judicial inquiry into the cause of the fire. He also assured that strict action would follow if any negligence came to light.

The Chief Minister also commended hospital staff and security personnel who helped rescue patients despite the risks involved. He directed officials to strengthen fire safety measures in hospitals across Odisha to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Monday when a major fire reportedly broke out in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the trauma care facility at SCB Medical College and Hospital.

Preliminary information suggests that the fire started between 2:30 AM and 3:00 AM, with a suspected electrical short circuit believed to be the cause. At least ten patients lost their lives, while several others sustained serious injuries.

Emergency teams evacuated more than twenty patients from the affected ICU area to safer wards after the fire broke out. Some critically ill patients died during the evacuation, while others succumbed later in different intensive care units.
