Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during which the two leaders discussed recent developments in West Asia and welcomed the understanding reached to end the conflict.
President Pezeshkian briefed Prime Minister Modi on the latest regional developments and the way forward.
PM Modi welcomed the understanding and reiterated the need for sustained efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability. He reaffirmed India’s consistent position that all issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and commerce in the region.
The two leaders had earlier spoken on March 21, when they discussed the security situation in West Asia.
During that conversation, Prime Minister Modi condemned attacks on critical infrastructure and underlined the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation while keeping shipping lanes open and secure.
In another conversation on March 12, the Prime Minister had expressed concern over escalating tensions in the region, highlighting the loss of civilian lives and damage to infrastructure.
The latest conversation comes weeks after Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi visited New Delhi for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where he described the India-developed Chabahar Port as a symbol of India-Iran cooperation. He expressed confidence that the port would become a ‘golden gate’ connecting India with Central Asia, the Caucasus and Europe despite delays caused by US sanctions, while also expressing hope that India would continue its development and play a constructive role in promoting regional peace and security.
