The International Energy Agency on Wednesday applauded India and Narendra Modi for achieving first criticality at the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR). It described the milestone as a significant technological advancement in nuclear energy.
In a statement on X, the agency praised Indian scientists and engineers for their sustained efforts over several years. It noted that the reactor would utilise considerably less nuclear fuel than traditional systems and support a transition towards a closed fuel cycle.

The development follows the PFBR at Kalpakkam reaching first criticality on Monday. This stage marks the initiation of a controlled nuclear fission reaction.

PM Modi highlighted that the indigenously designed PFBR reflects India’s scientific and engineering capabilities. He emphasised that the reactor can generate more fuel than it consumes, strengthening long-term energy security.
The facility has been developed by the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research and constructed by Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited under the Department of Atomic Energy.
Fast breeder reactors play a crucial role in India’s nuclear roadmap. They enhance fuel efficiency and enable the production of additional fissile material.
Officials stated that the PFBR will also support the utilisation of India’s vast thorium reserves in the programme’s third stage.
The reactor contributes to the broader objective of achieving a closed fuel cycle. This involves recycling nuclear material and minimising waste generation.
