The Budget Session of Parliament begins on Wednesday with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, marking the formal start of one of the most significant legislative exercises of the year.
The session will continue until April 2, with Parliament dividing the proceedings into two phases to allow debate and detailed scrutiny of legislative business.
According to official indications, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget for the 2026–27 financial year on February 1. The date falls on a Sunday, making it an unusual occasion that would require special parliamentary arrangements.
Ahead of the Budget, the government will table the Economic Survey—an annual assessment of the country’s economic performance and outlook—in Parliament on January 29.
Earlier this month, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that the President had approved the summoning of both Houses for the Budget Session beginning on January 28.
He stated that the first phase would conclude on February 13, after which Parliament would reconvene on March 9 for the second phase.
The two-part structure allows initial discussions on the Budget and other key issues, followed by examination by parliamentary standing committees during the recess. Final debates and the passage of financial legislation are expected during the second phase.
Focus on Economy and Policy Reforms
The Budget Session comes at a crucial juncture, with the government emphasising economic growth, fiscal discipline and policy responses to emerging challenges.
Key areas likely to dominate discussions include infrastructure development, employment generation, taxation and sustainability initiatives.
Members of Parliament from across party lines will participate in extensive debates on public expenditure and reform measures. In total, the session will comprise 30 sittings, underscoring its legislative significance.
The government has reiterated its commitment to transparency and effective parliamentary functioning, as lawmakers prepare to deliberate on financial priorities shaping the country’s economic direction.
