Union Home Minister Amit Shah recalled the enduring social vision of Bhagwan Swaminarayan while attending the bicentenary celebrations of the Shikshapatri in Gandhinagar.
Bhagwan Swaminarayan authored the Shikshapatri on the auspicious occasion of Vasant Panchami over two centuries ago. He framed it as a moral code to guide society toward righteous conduct, discipline, and harmony.
In 1822, Bhagwan Swaminarayan established the Swaminarayan Temple in Gandhinagar.
The site has now become the centre of the grand Samaiyo Mahotsav, marking 200 years of the Shikshapatri’s influence on Indian social and spiritual life.
Home Minister Amit Shah visited the temple during the celebrations and received the sacred darshan of the original Shikshapatri.
He described the moment as a rare privilege and a reminder of India’s civilisational wisdom.
Ethics Guiding Modern Society
The Shikshapatri lays down clear principles for ethical living. It stresses honesty, self-restraint, compassion, and respect for social order.
Over generations, these teachings have shaped personal conduct and community life across regions.
Shah underlined that Bhagwan Swaminarayan did not limit his message to spiritual practice alone.
HM Amit Shah offered a structured moral framework to strengthen society, governance, and collective responsibility.
He emphasised that the relevance of the Shikshapatri has increased in modern times. Rapid change, social pressures, and moral confusion demand strong value systems rooted in tradition.
Shah called upon the youth to read the Shikshapatri actively and adopt its teachings in daily life.
He stated that young citizens must internalise discipline and ethical clarity to build a stable future.
According to Shah, the text does not belong only to followers of the Swaminarayan tradition. It offers universal guidance for humanity, regardless of faith or background.
The Samaiyo Mahotsav stands as a reminder of India’s spiritual heritage and its role in shaping responsible citizens.
Leaders across generations continue to draw inspiration from Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s timeless message of righteous living.
