On Monday, Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu told the Rajya Sabha that the government had successfully delivered more than 88 lakh houses to beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) as of November 2024.
In a written response, the minister reported that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) had sanctioned a total of 1.18 crore houses since the scheme’s launch in 2015.
Under the initiative, the ministry has been assisting states and Union Territories by providing central funds to support the construction of pucca houses in urban areas across India.
Sahu in his statement stated, “Based on project proposals submitted by the State/UT Governments under PMAY-U, as on 18.11.2024, a total of 118.64 lakh houses have been sanctioned by the Ministry, and more than 88.02 lakh are completed/delivered to the beneficiaries. The remaining houses are at different stages of construction”
The minister also spoke about the lessons learned from the ongoing efforts under PMAY-U, which led to the launch of PMAY-U 2.0 ‘Housing for All’ Mission on 1 September 2024.
The new phase of the program aims to construct, purchase, and rent 10 million houses for eligible beneficiaries in urban areas through four key components:
- Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC),
- Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP),
- Affordable Rental Housing (ARH), and
- Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS)
As of now, 29 states and Union Territories have signed Memoranda of Agreement to implement PMAY-U 2.0, further strengthening the initiative’s reach and impact.
