Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar
Congress and its allies in the Rajya Sabha moved a no-confidence motion against Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar On Tuesday . The INDIA bloc submitted the proposal to the Secretary General of the upper house, accusing Dhankhar of conducting proceedings in a biased and partisan manner.
Congress members stated that the Chairman’s actions undermine democratic processes, prompting the opposition to take this unprecedented step. The motion, signed by around 60 MPs, has been submitted under Article 67-B of the Constitution.
Opposition MPs, who signed the motion, expressed regret over having to take such a step. However, they stressed that it was necessary to safeguard parliamentary democracy. They claimed the motion was vital to address what they saw as unequal treatment in the Rajya Sabha.
Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala criticized the ruling party, alleging it is deliberately obstructing parliamentary debates on critical issues such as corruption, inflation, and unemployment. “This is a black chapter in parliamentary history,” Surjewala said. “The government is avoiding discussions and wasting Parliament’s time.”
The opposition also raised concerns over unequal treatment in the Rajya Sabha. They allege that while the ruling party is given the floor during disruptions, the opposition is denied the same opportunity. Congress MP Pramod Tiwari stated the opposition was always ready for debates, but accused the BJP of adjournment tactics to avoid pressing issues like unemployment and violence in UP’s Sambhal.
The no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman signals a growing rift between the opposition and the ruling government. Both sides continue to accuse each other of obstructing the democratic functioning of Parliament.
