The Supreme Court has taken note of the controversial speech made by Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court. A statement issued by the apex court confirmed that it has received details from the High Court regarding the matter and is currently under consideration.
At a provincial convention of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s Law Cell in Kashi on Sunday, Justice Yadav reportedly stated that “the country would function as per the wishes of the ‘bahusankhyak’ (majority) living in Hindustan.” He emphasized that the country would operate according to the majority’s wishes, which he framed as law.
Further media reports suggested Justice Yadav made derogatory comments, referring to certain groups as harmful to the nation, accusing them of hindering progress. His remarks were reportedly aimed at individuals he described as “kathmullah,” who he claimed were detrimental to the country and incited public unrest.
Prashant Bhushan, convenor of Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms (CJAR), demanded an in-house inquiry into Justice Yadav’s conduct. He accused the judge of “judicial impropriety” and violating the judicial code of conduct by making divisive and discriminatory statements. Bhushan also criticized Justice Yadav’s participation in the event, arguing that his words undermined the rule of law and the principles of secularism.
In his letter to the Chief Justice of India, Bhushan emphasized that Yadav’s speech not only violated constitutional values but also eroded public trust in the judiciary. The CJAR condemned the judge’s actions, asserting that they damaged the integrity and impartiality of the judicial institution.
The controversy surrounding Justice Yadav’s speech continues to spark debate, raising concerns over the conduct of sitting judges and their role in maintaining judicial independence.
