Former Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh, OP Singh, participated in the Crime Literature Festival. During his session, he shared the story of his first major encounter with Sikh militants. He emphasized how terrorism and criminal incidents should be dealt with.
OP Singh, who joined the police service in 1992, recalled that Sikh terrorism was at its peak at that time. The year before, 32 murders had been committed due to terrorist activities. Shortly after he joined, a Sikh man approached him with crucial information. The man explained that terrorists were harassing his family and provided vital details about the militants.
Encounter Details and the Aftermath
OP Singh described this information as the first lead in their investigation. The intelligence led to a major encounter. Seven weapons were recovered from four terrorist vehicles involved in the operation. Singh said this was a significant success for him early in his career.
He explained that this encounter occurred just 7-8 days after he became the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Lakhimpur Kheri. Singh considered this operation to be his first big success in law enforcement.
OP Singh’s Career and Legacy
OP Singh, full name Om Prakash Singh, was born on January 2, 1960. He is a 1983 batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre. In 2018, he was appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) for Uttar Pradesh by the Yogi Adityanath government. Prior to this role, he worked as the Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). He also served as the Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
His participation at the Crime Literature Festival offered insight into his policing career and the challenges he faced while tackling terrorism. The encounter with Sikh militants remains one of the key events that defined his career as a police officer.
