A small aircraft executed an emergency crash landing approximately nine kilometres from the Rourkela airstrip on Saturday following the detection of a technical fault mid-flight.
Airport authorities at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) confirmed the incident, praising the quick action of the pilot in averting a potential disaster.
Following the technical fault, the pilot immediately decided to land on a nearby plain, saving everyone on board. Officials reported that all passengers remained unharmed, while the pilot suffered injuries requiring further assessment.
Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena lauded the pilot, stating, “The pilot went for crash landing at a plain field 10 km before the runway. All six including four passengers on board are safe. The pilot and co-pilots are alive. One of the pilots is injured. The plane slightly nosedived. There is minor damage to fuselage but the wings are intact. An investigation will be carried out soon.”
Aircraft operations under the regional connectivity scheme carried seven people in total, including the pilot.
Investigators have confirmed that the precise reason for the technical fault remains unknown. Officials assured that all safety protocols were followed, preventing any casualties.
Investigators have begun a detailed inquiry to determine the cause of the technical snag. Damage to the aircraft was minor, and the pilot’s rapid decision-making ensured passenger safety.
Authorities are reviewing maintenance records and flight data to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Incidents such as this highlight the importance of pilot training and emergency preparedness. While the exact cause of the technical fault is still being investigated, all passengers survived, and emergency measures proved effective.
“The reason of technical snag is yet to be ascertained,” said BPIA director Prasanna Pradhan.
