The Odisha BJP announced on Friday evening that it will go solo in the upcoming assembly and Lok Sabha elections, ending talks of a potential alliance with the ruling BJD. BJP state president Manmohan Samal clarified that discussions held in Delhi focused solely on election preparations, with no mention of alliance or seat-sharing. Samal asserted the party’s confidence in contesting and winning elections independently.
On the other hand, BJD leaders VK Pandian and Pranab Prakash Das, who traveled to Delhi for alliance discussions, returned to Bhubaneswar without any official statement. Sources revealed that although initial talks hinted at a possible alliance, negotiations collapsed over disagreements regarding seat distribution.
According to reports, BJD insisted on a significant share of assembly seats, seeking over 100 out of 147, while BJP deemed this demand unacceptable, fearing it would compromise their electoral prospects. Similarly, BJD was unwilling to concede to BJP’s demand for 14 out of 21 Lok Sabha seats, arguing that it would be detrimental to their own electoral performance.
This development marks a significant shift from the history of the two parties, which were allies between 1998 and 2009, during which they secured substantial victories in both assembly and Lok Sabha elections. However, with the current stalemate, both parties are poised to contest the upcoming elections independently, potentially altering the political landscape of Odisha.
