Nilgiris Tightens Border Surveillance After Suspected Nipah Case In Kerala

The Nilgiris district administration has heightened border monitoring measures following reports of a suspected Nipah virus infection in Kerala’s Kozhikode district.

Officials said the move aims to prevent any possible transmission of the virus into Tamil Nadu.

Authorities have introduced a series of precautionary measures across key entry points along the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border.

District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru said health personnel have been stationed at major checkpoints, including Thaloor, Nadugani, Nambiarkunnu, Soladi and Pattavayal.

Officials are screening travellers and tourists arriving from Kerala for symptoms associated with Nipah virus infection. They are also maintaining close observation of the evolving situation.

The heightened alert follows preliminary reports indicating that a patient in Kozhikode tested positive for the virus.

Although officials have not identified any confirmed threat to Tamil Nadu, they have adopted a preventive strategy due to regular interstate movement.

Health authorities noted that residents of several border villages frequently travel to Kerala for employment and commercial activities.

As a result, officials have expanded surveillance beyond border checkpoints and intensified monitoring in areas with significant migrant worker populations.

Authorities are conducting health assessments and strengthening field-level monitoring in vulnerable locations.

Government hospitals, primary health centres, community health facilities and private medical institutions have received instructions to remain alert.

Officials have directed healthcare facilities to immediately report suspected Nipah-related symptoms to enable swift intervention.

The administration has also urged visitors arriving from Kerala to seek medical attention if they develop fever, respiratory illness or related symptoms.

Collector Tanneeru emphasised that these measures remain purely precautionary. She urged residents not to panic and assured them that authorities would continue to coordinate closely with health agencies.

Officials expressed confidence in the district’s preparedness and stated that surveillance would continue as a preventive safeguard.
