Following the sexual abuse of girls in Badlapur, Maharashtra, the NGO Bachpan Bachao has filed a petition in the Supreme Court. The petition demands the implementation of Central Government guidelines on child safety. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the petition, scheduled for September 24. Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice NK Singh will hear the case.
Call for Implementation of Safety Guidelines
Senior advocate HS Phoolka, representing Bachpan Bachao, told the court that only five states have implemented the Central Government’s guidelines. The petition urges the court to direct the Central Government to ensure that other states follow suit. It highlights a recent incident in Badlapur where two schoolgirls were allegedly raped by a staff member. The petition argues that proper implementation of the 2019 guidelines by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and NCPCR could have prevented such incidents.
Court’s Comments and Previous Petition
The Bombay High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the Badlapur incident. It has stressed the need to educate boys about gender equality from an early age and to change their mindset. The court has directed the formation of a committee to recommend rules for schools to prevent similar incidents. Additionally, Bachpan Bachao Andolan filed a similar petition in the Supreme Court in 2019, seeking the implementation of safety guidelines for children in schools nationwide.
