New Criminal Laws: Amit Shah Says BNS, BNSS, BSA Are More Transparent and Technology-Driven

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the three new criminal laws — the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) — are more transparent, technology-oriented and time-bound than the earlier ‘colonial’ criminal justice system.

Addressing an exhibition showcasing provisions of the three laws, Shah said they aim to strengthen the protection of citizens, property and victims while speeding up the criminal justice process. He said the new framework is more victim-centric than punishment-centric.

Shah highlighted provisions including Zero FIR, E-FIR, electronic evidence, forensic evidence and online court proceedings, saying they make the new criminal laws more focused on victims. He further said greater use of technology would enable police to collect more technology-based evidence during investigations and help speed up trials.

The Minister criticised the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government, alleging that it deliberately delayed notification for implementing the three new laws in West Bengal. He claimed that the delay stemmed from concerns that the new laws would expose alleged corruption under the previous government.

Shah said the BJP had promised voters in the Bengal elections a government based on trust rather than fear. He added that the first file signed by newly appointed Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari after taking office was related to implementing the three new criminal codes and removing the old British-era laws.

Shah further alleged that proper investigations were not conducted under the previous Trinamool government in several high-profile cases, including the RG Kar rape and murder case, the Kasba Law College case, the alleged assault on women at Sandeshkhali and the Durgapur Medical College rape case.
