In a proactive move to boost passenger safety, the North Central Railway (NCR) has announced the installation of CCTV cameras in all passenger coaches across its Prayagraj, Jhansi, and Agra divisions.
This large-scale surveillance initiative covers 895 LHB coaches and 887 ICF coaches, modernising the region’s railway safety infrastructure.
Selected premium trains, including the Prayagraj Express and Shramshakti Express, will feature AI-enabled cameras designed for enhanced monitoring and passenger tracking.
These smart systems are expected to provide a higher level of vigilance, particularly in high-traffic and overnight routes.
In the first phase, the CCTV installation will begin in trains such as the Prayagraj–Dr Ambedkar Nagar Express, Kalindi Express, Prayagraj–Lalgarh Express, Subedarganj–Dehradun Express, Subedarganj–Meerut City Sangam Express, and Subedarganj–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Jammu Mail, as reported by ANI.
Coach-Wide Coverage for Maximum Security
Officials stated that they will equip each air-conditioned coach—including First AC, Second AC, Third AC, and Chair Car—with four CCTV cameras.
General compartments, SLR coaches, and pantry cars will each have six cameras, providing comprehensive visual coverage.
Officials will install these high-resolution cameras at entry points and corridors to fully monitor passenger movement throughout the journey.
The equipment is capable of functioning effectively even at speeds above 100 kmph and in low-light conditions, offering reliable surveillance across diverse operating environments.
Officials at NCR headquarters and DRM offices in Agra, Jhansi, and Prayagraj will monitor all footage in real time.
Officials are also evaluating the extension of this surveillance system to locomotive cabins, further strengthening operational safety.
“This initiative reflects the railway’s commitment to safer journeys,” said Shashikant Tripathi, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NCR. “It will act as a deterrent to unlawful activities while aiding in quick investigation and proactive monitoring.”
Authorities consider the CCTV project an important component of broader efforts to boost passenger confidence and raise security standards across India’s railway network.
NCR will begin installation work shortly, signalling its commitment to smarter and safer rail travel.
By incorporating AI-based technology and round-the-clock monitoring, the NCR is setting a new benchmark in railway safety.
This forward-looking approach aims to ensure secure, comfortable, and transparent travel experiences for millions of passengers across the region.
