Cause of concern for the environment
National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued notice to the Punjab Chief Secretary and the Member Secretary, Central Pollution Control Board over the burning of crop residue. It is to be noted that this burnings add to air pollution in the national capital. It is to be noted that these burnings increased to a great extent in the recent times.

These crop burnings are one of the greatest contributor in increasing the quantity of Nitrogen Di-Oxide in the atmosphere of National Capital Region (NCR). Judge Prakash Shrivastava, representing the NGT, and expert member A Senthil Vel’s bench highlighted a report from the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) that included names of the hotspot districts and comparative data on crop burning incidences over a three-year period.

The bench noted that in order to determine where corrective actions should be taken, the state authorities including the PPCB officials are required to pinpoint the hotspot districts’ most severely damaged areas. Usually the stubble burnings take place between September 15 to November 30 and during this period the concerned persons are needed to be aware in identifying the defaulters and take suitable steps including imposition of penalty, the bench said
