The financial capital of India woke up to chaos and disruption as heavy rainfall lashed the city and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) overnight, severely impacting daily life on Monday.
The downpour, which began in the early hours and intensified rapidly, inundated streets, railway tracks, and low-lying areas across several neighborhoods.
According to the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), several areas within the city recorded an astonishing 200 mm to 300 mm of rainfall between 1 AM and 7 AM.
The incessant rain has prompted authorities to issue warnings of continued heavy showers over the next two days.
As Mumbai residents slept, the downpour led to widespread waterlogging, with roads, railway tracks, homes, shops, and offices submerged in water.
Critical transport arteries, including major subways such as Santacruz, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Malad, Kandivali, and Dahisar, reported water levels rising to 3-5 feet, halting east-west traffic movements.
Suburban Trains Disrupted Across Mumbai Region:
The city’s lifeline, the suburban local train network that transports millions daily, experienced significant disruptions. Both Central Railway and Western Railway networks, spanning Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, faced delays and cancellations.
Long-distance trains linking Mumbai with Gujarat, Pune, and Kolhapur also experienced disruptions, leaving thousands of commuters stranded or delayed.
Residents in housing complexes across Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, Jogeshwari, Andheri, Santacruz, Sion, Wadala, Kurla, Ghatkopar, and Bhandup faced challenges as their residential areas were submerged.
Meanwhile, Housing complexes in residential areas such as Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, Jogeshwari, Andheri, Santacruz, Sion, Wadala, Kurla, Ghatkopar, and Bhandup faced submersion, presenting challenges for residents.
Reports also indicated numerous vehicles stuck or partially submerged in various parts of the city.
Despite the widespread disruption, authorities have not reported any casualties so far.
Efforts are underway to pump out water from flooded areas and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
Mumbai, known for its resilience in the face of monsoon challenges, continues to grapple with the aftermath of this intense rainfall, with civic agencies and emergency responders working tirelessly to mitigate the impact on residents and commuters.
