The Uttar Pradesh police on Thursday rejected the reports of reinvestigation of the 1978 communal riots case, which claimed several lives, in Sambhal.
The police clarification comes after reports of reinvestigation of the decades-old communal riots in Sambhal surfaced.
“A misleading piece of information is being spread through social media and other platforms that a reinvestigation into the 1978 communal riots in Sambhal is being initiated. However, no such development is taking place,” Sambhal Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishna Kumar Bishnoi said.

He further said that “MLC Shreesh Chandra Sharma had submitted a letter under Rule 115 on December 17, requesting details regarding the 1978 riots. Consequently, the government had sought information on the matter.” The relevant information is being compiled, and it will be sent to the government once the process is complete, he said.
Earlier, reports claimed that the Superintendent of Police (SP) received a letter from the Deputy Secretary of the Home (Police) Department, appointing an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) to lead the probe.
However, rebuking the claim of a reinvestigation into the 1978 case, Sambhal SP said that reports were misleading and mere rumors.
Notably, tension has been simmering in the Sambhal district after the November 24 violence following the survey ar the historic at the Shahi Jama Masjid in the city’s Kot Garvi area
