Air traffic across significant parts of the Middle East encountered severe disruption on Saturday after Israel launched airstrikes on Tehran, prompting multiple nations to close their airspace.
Israel, Iran, Iraq and Dubai imposed restrictions, compelling airlines to suspend or reroute services amid escalating security concerns.
Airports across much of the Gulf region experienced operational strain. Carriers cancelled departures, diverted aircraft mid-route, or altered flight corridors to avoid affected zones.
Safety considerations drove these rapid decisions as tensions intensified.
Israel shut its skies to civilian aviation shortly after the strikes. Several European and Gulf-based airlines either suspended scheduled services or amended flight paths to bypass the conflict area.
Over the past two years, carriers operating in West Asia have repeatedly navigated similar instability, as regional hostilities triggered abrupt airspace closures.
Air India confirmed that its Delhi-Tel Aviv service returned to Mumbai after Israeli authorities sealed their airspace.
The airline stated that it prioritised passenger and crew safety. It added that it would continuously assess the evolving security landscape before resuming operations.
IndiGo also announced that it was closely monitoring developments concerning Iran and neighbouring territories.
In a post on social media platform X, the airline indicated readiness to implement operational adjustments if necessary.
It advised passengers to verify flight status prior to departure from airports.
The crisis deepened after US President Donald Trump declared that the United States and Israel were conducting ‘major’ joint combat operations in Tehran.
Meanwhile, the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, characterised the strikes as preventive measures.
The repercussions extended to international carriers. Russia’s transport ministry reported that Russian airlines had halted flights to Israel and Iran.
It confirmed that services to Gulf destinations would operate via alternative corridors. Officials cautioned that diversions would likely extend flight durations.
Dubai-based flydubai stated that temporary closures of Iraqi, Iranian and Israeli airspace disrupted portions of its network.
Airlines throughout the region are expected to avoid high-risk zones until conditions stabilise.
Prolonged detours could elevate fuel expenditure and operational costs in the interim.
