On the auspicious occasion of Teachers’ Day, the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) held a special welcome ceremony for the new cohort of students enrolled in the Diploma in Yogic Sciences (DYSc) program.
The event underscored the essential role that teachers, or Gurus, play in the realm of Yoga.
The ceremony featured insights from leading Yoga and Ayurveda experts who shared their knowledge with the incoming students.
Prof. Sanjeev Sharma, Vice Chancellor of the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur, Prof. Sudipta Rath, Dean of Interdisciplinary Courses and IT In-Charge at NIA, and Dr. Kashinath Samgandi, Director of MDNIY, delivered the keynote addresses.
Prof. Sharma, as the Chief Guest, highlighted the revered tradition of the Guru in Indian culture. Reflecting on the Gurukul system, he noted, “Our tradition holds that a Guru teaches not just academic subjects but imparts life lessons as well. A teacher reaches the mind through the heart, guiding us to learn from both our mistakes and our successes. We must strive to be both students and teachers to perpetuate the cycle of learning.”
He praised India’s spiritual heritage and the unique energy of MDNIY, emphasizing its potential to contribute positively to society and global well-being.
He also acknowledged MDNIY’s role in promoting Yoga on the International Day of Yoga.
Dr. Samgandi shared exciting updates about MDNIY’s future projects, revealing plans to develop modules for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) that will be published by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Prof. Rath spoke about the value of learning from errors, encouraging students to embrace their experiences as growth opportunities.
He cited Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a distinguished Yoga teacher and former Vice President of India, who championed the idea that Yoga fosters consciousness, a fundamental aspect of Yoga philosophy.
Prof. Rath also emphasized the importance of disseminating Yoga’s philosophical teachings, recognizing India’s leadership in this global field.
Both students and faculty attended the event, reflecting their shared commitment to Yoga education values and practices.
