Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday strongly criticized the practice of “Bulldozer justice” and urged the government to uphold the “Rule of Law by Law” instead of punishing the families of criminals. In a post on her X handle, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister emphasized that criminal elements should face legal action, not their families or close associates.
Mayawati highlighted that her previous administration in Uttar Pradesh had adhered to this principle, establishing the “Rule of Law by Law.” She also addressed the growing trend of using bulldozers to demolish properties, urging that such actions must comply with Supreme Court decisions.

She remarked, “It would be better if there is no need to use bulldozers, as criminal elements can be dealt with under strict laws.” Mayawati further argued that instead of targeting the families of criminals, strict action should be taken against officials who, in collusion with these elements, fail to deliver justice to the victims. She called on all governments to take this into account.
Opposition parties have consistently criticized the BJP government for what they call “Bulldozer justice,” accusing it of punishing families of accused individuals before any legal proceedings. Mayawati’s comments follow the Supreme Court’s recent deliberation on establishing guidelines to prevent the demolition of properties belonging to individuals accused of criminal offenses.
The Supreme Court on Monday stressed that even unauthorized constructions must be demolished “in accordance with law” and clarified that demolitions cannot be used as punishment, whether the individuals are accused or convicted.
