Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam spoke warmly of India’s longstanding support and expertise during a joint press briefing with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi.
Highlighting the comprehensive nature of India’s assistance, Ramgoolam said Mauritius has benefited greatly in vital sectors such as health, education, capacity building, renewable energy, infrastructure, and maritime security.
Ramgoolam expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received in Varanasi, noting the strong electoral support for PM Modi in the region.
He acknowledged India’s continuous role in supporting Mauritius’s journey towards progress and development over the years.
The Mauritius PM thanked India for announcing a special economic package that will address key sectors, including education, energy, infrastructure, and health services.
He highlighted the establishment of an ayurvedic centre as a significant project born out of this collaboration, expressing confidence that these initiatives will produce tangible results.
Ramgoolam also recalled PM Modi’s earlier visit to Mauritius, which marked the elevation of bilateral relations through a joint document on an enhanced strategic partnership.
This landmark development has set the stage for deeper cooperation in a range of areas.
A Forward-Looking Phase in Bilateral Relations
The Prime Minister described the current phase of Mauritius-India relations as dynamic and forward-looking.
Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during the visit, covering community development, power, energy, science and technology research, education, marine science, and space research.
Ramgoolam highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the double taxation avoidance treaty and to develop a comprehensive training structure for the Mauritius police force, with India continuing to provide essential training.
Maritime security emerged as a key topic of discussion, with Mauritius seeking technical cooperation from India to enhance surveillance capabilities over its vast exclusive economic zone.
Ramgoolam mentioned plans to raise the Mauritian flag on the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia, reflecting the strategic importance of the region.
Beyond the bilateral agenda, Ramgoolam noted that he and PM Modi engaged in ‘deep exchanges’ on pressing global challenges such as climate change and maritime security.
The Mauritian leader affirmed that shared values, a common vision, and enduring friendship—not just history or geography—bind the two countries together.
