Manipur Police have urged the help from army in training personnel to use 7.62 mm Medium Machine Guns (MMGs). The police, to respond the rising militant attacks, purchased the MMGs from Ordnance Factory, Jabalpur, but lack trained manpower to operate them.
Assistant Director (Administration) of the Manipur Police Training College, S. Gautam Singh, confirmed the request in a letter to the Army’s 57th Mountain Division. He proposed a 21-day training program starting September 9, to be held at the Manipur Police Training College in Pangei.
The move comes as Manipur faces increasing violence from suspected Kuki militants, who have used drones and sophisticated weapons in recent attacks. Two people, including a 31-year-old woman, were killed, and 12 others injured during assaults on Sejam Chirang and Koutruk villages in Imphal West and Imphal East districts on Sunday and Monday.

The Director General of Police, Manipur, Rajiv Singh, expressed serious concern over the militants’ use of drones and advanced weaponry. He said the state police are working closely with the Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG) and other experts to address the new threat.
“I’ve spoken to officials in Delhi, including the DG NSG. A high-level committee has been formed to tackle these drone attacks. We are determined to find a solution quickly,” the DGP assured, adding that security forces continue their combing operations to apprehend the militants.
