A horrifying video of two women in Manipur being paraded naked on a road by a gang of men has gone viral on social media. A tribal group claims that the two women were subjected to multiple gang rapes in a field.
According to a statement by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), the incident took place on May 4 in the Kangpokpi area, around 35 kilometers from the state capital Imphal. The event, according to the police, took place in a different district, despite the fact that the first information report (FIR) was submitted in Kangpokpi.
Conflicts between the Meitei, a valley-majority tribe, and the Kuki tribe, a hill-majority tribe, in Manipur, broke out the day before this on-camera tragedy occurred over the Meiteis’ quest for Scheduled Tribes (ST) classification.
The ITLF stated in its statement, “The despicable scene, which happened on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, shows the men constantly molesting the helpless women, who cry and plead with their captors.”
The ITLF urged the National Commission for Women and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to intervene, claiming that the perpetrators’ choice to post the video, which reveals the victims’ identities, on social media had only served to magnify the horrifying ordeal endured by these defenseless women.
The Manipur Police said today that they had reported a gang rape and murder case via Twitter.
On social media, political figures and others have expressed horror over the Manipur event and urged the federal and state governments to punish the perpetrators.
“The horrifying video showing the sexual assault of two ladies coming from Manipur is abhorrent and blatantly inhuman. I spoke with CM @NBirenSinghji, who confirmed that an inquiry is ongoing and that all efforts will be made to bring those responsible to justice. Smriti Irani, a minister for the union, tweeted on Wednesday.
“The state of affairs in Manipur is really frightening. I implore the Prime Minister to take Manipur’s issue seriously. Please impose harsh punishment on the offenders shown in the incident video. People with such criminal tendencies shouldn’t be allowed anywhere in India, he continued.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a leader in the Congress, tweeted in Hindi that the images of sexual assault against women arriving from Manipur are heartbreaking. “There is less outrage over this horrifying act of abuse against women. The majority of the burden of violence in society falls on women and children, she tweeted.
“Unsettling films showing a woman from a certain group being paraded naked by a mob are coming out of Manipur. The interactions between the two communities there have completely broken down. Hatred has triumphed in Manipur, tweeted Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, leader of the Tipra Motha Party in Tripura.
“India, pay attention. On May 4, two indigenous women from Manipur had their modesty violated. In full view of the public, they were paraded naked, fondled, and beaten. Today, a horrific video that the perpetrator shot surfaced and went viral. Hoihnu Hauzel, a journalist who lives in Manipur, stated that this violates all standards of humanity.
