In a significant move affecting Netflix users in India, the streaming behemoth has put an end to password sharing for account access. Netflix has started distributing emails to its Indian customers, clearly stating that accounts are intended for exclusive use within a single household.
This action was anticipated, as Netflix had already implemented similar measures in many other countries. India, along with markets like Indonesia, Croatia, and Kenya, will see the enforcement of this policy starting from July 20, 2023, as part of Netflix’s effort to boost revenue in the latter half of the year.
An official statement from Netflix explained that their accounts are designed for use by one household, allowing all members living in that household to enjoy Netflix content both at home and on the go. The platform has introduced new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices to enhance the user experience.
Acknowledging that members have a variety of entertainment choices, Netflix emphasized its continued investment in a wide range of new films and TV shows, catering to diverse tastes, moods, and languages. The company aims to ensure a satisfying viewing experience for all its subscribers.
Earlier in May, Netflix implemented similar restrictions on password sharing in over 100 countries, including major markets such as the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, and Brazil. Additionally, Netflix introduced an option for paying customers to add an extra member from outside their household, subject to an additional monthly fee. In the United States, this fee is set at $8 (₹660). To facilitate a seamless transition, members can transfer profiles, retaining their viewing history and personalized recommendations.
These measures are part of Netflix’s ongoing efforts to combat the widespread practice of account sharing, which reportedly involves over 100 million households worldwide.
