The Government of Manipur has extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services, including broadband and VPN access, across five Imphal valley districts until April 18, citing ongoing law and order concerns.
Authorities are restricted from preventing the spread of misinformation and rumours on social media platforms that could trigger unrest.
Officials stated that limited technical capability to regulate digital content necessitated the continued shutdown.
The restrictions followed a deadly bomb attack in Bishnupur district on April 7, allegedly carried out by suspected militants, which resulted in the deaths of two children and left their mother injured.
Since then, the administration has extended the suspension in phases, covering Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts to prevent escalation of violence.
The decision came after a review conducted by Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) NE Ashok Kumar.
Authorities warned that misuse of social media, including the circulation of false information and bulk messaging, could mobilise crowds and lead to violence, property damage, and public safety risks. They cautioned that any violation of the orders would invite legal action.
District Magistrates in the affected regions have partially relaxed curfew restrictions under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
Residents can move between 5 AM and 5 PM for essential activities, while Bishnupur allows relaxation only from 5 AM to 10 AM.
The orders prohibit carrying any weapons during this period. Shops and retail outlets may operate within the permitted hours.
Protests continue across the valley, with citizens demanding justice for the victims.
The government has transferred the investigation into the attack to the National Investigation Agency for further action.
