On Thursday, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appeared before the Calcutta High Court to argue a public interest litigation related to violence reported after the recently concluded Assembly elections in the state.
The matter was heard by a division bench headed by Chief Justice Sujoy Paul, along with Justice Partha Sarathi Sen.
Advocate Sirsanya Banerjee, son of senior lawyer and Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee, filed the petition.
Sirsanya Banerjee had contested the Assembly election from Uttarpara in Hooghly district as a Trinamool Congress candidate but lost to BJP nominee Dipanjan Chakraborty by more than 10,000 votes.
Mamata Banerjee arrived at the High Court wearing an advocate’s black coat and white collar-band along with her customary white saree with blue borders. This marked her appearance as counsel in the case concerning alleged post-election violence.
Earlier this year, Banerjee had also attended proceedings in the Supreme Court during a hearing linked to the Special Intensive Revision process in West Bengal. Although she briefly addressed the bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant at that time, she had not formally appeared as counsel in the matter.
The recent Assembly election in West Bengal resulted in a defeat for both Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress.
Banerjee lost the Bhabanipur seat in south Kolkata to current Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari by a margin of more than 15,000 votes.
Following the election outcome, she did not submit her resignation to Governor RN Ravi, stating that the poll results did not reflect the actual public mandate.
Later, the Governor dissolved the previous Assembly, leading to the end of the cabinet headed by her government.
