A 21-year-old man’s death in a road accident sparked a major protest outside a Mahindra dealership in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu, with family members and local residents alleging that the airbags in his Mahindra Scorpio failed to deploy during the crash.
Protesters suspended the damaged SUV from a crane outside the dealership and painted it with the slogans ‘Death Box’ and ‘Tin Box’.
The demonstration disrupted traffic before police intervened to restore order.
The accident occurred near Dundlod Public School, where Tarun Nayak, 21, died in a high-impact collision. His family claimed he was wearing a seat belt and alleged the airbags did not deploy despite the severity of the crash.
Tarun’s family demanded accountability from Mahindra. His friend, Dheeraj Jat, said the family wanted justice rather than compensation or a replacement vehicle. He questioned the company’s safety claims and warned that protesters would lock the dealership if authorities failed to act.
Protesters also rejected private discussions with dealership officials.
Another protester, Sanjay, alleged that the management tried to divide the crowd by holding separate meetings.
Gehlot Motors Manager Ravi Sharma expressed condolences to the family and said the Scorpio had been purchased in late March from Bikaner Motors in Churu. He said airbags deploy only under specific technical conditions and not in every collision.
Ravi Sharma added that a detailed technical investigation would determine why the airbags failed to deploy. He said Mahindra’s senior management was monitoring the case and assisting the family with insurance claims and other support.
Authorities and technical experts will examine the vehicle to determine whether the airbags failed because of a manufacturing defect, crash dynamics or another technical factor.
