The Maharashtra government has issued a gazette notification announcing the nomination of seven leaders to the Maharashtra Legislative Council from the Governor’s quota. This development occurred late Monday night following the Governor’s approval.

Among the seven nominees, three are affiliate with the BJP, while two represent Shiv Sena and two belong to the NCP. Each member will serve a six-year term. Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the MahaYuti coalition chose to nominate seven members, leaving five positions open for nomination after the elections. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde submitted the names for the Governor’s assent earlier on Monday.

Details of the Nominated Leaders

The BJP’s nominees include Chitra Wagh, the state women’s wing chief; Vikrant Patil, a party leader from Raigad district; and Dharmguru Babusing Maharaj Rathod from Washim, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Banjara Virasat Museum.

The NCP has nominated former legislator Pankaj Bhujbal, the son of party Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, along with Idris Naikwadi from western Maharashtra. NCP national president Ajit Pawar considered the late Baba Siddique for a nomination in light of recent events.

Oath Ceremony Scheduled

The newly nominated members will take their oaths at noon in the Vidhan Bhavan, with Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe administering the ceremony.

Background and Previous Nominations

During the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government (November 2019 – June 2022), 12 names were recommended to former Governor B.S. Koshyari, who did not grant approval despite successive reminders from the Maha Vikas Aghadi government.
