Mahalaya holds particular significance for Bengalis as it signals the countdown to Durga Puja.
According to Hindu mythology, the occasion is associated with Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
The day also marks the traditional ritual of ‘Chokkhu Daan’, during which artists paint the eyes of Goddess Durga’s idols, symbolically completing them.
Devotees also perform ‘tarpan’ along riverbanks, including the Ganga, offering prayers and water in memory of departed ancestors.
Mahalaya ushers in the period of devotion and cultural celebrations leading up to Durga Puja, one of the most widely celebrated festivals in West Bengal.
