The extensive preparations and fire safety measures put in place by the Yogi government played a critical role in averting a potential disaster at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on February 6.
A fire broke out at a camp in the Mela area, but thanks to the swift and efficient response of the fire brigade, the situation was brought under control immediately, preventing any significant damage or casualties.
A short circuit sparked the fire in the ISKCON area, affecting tents in the Swami Hariharanand and Swami Sukhdevanand camps located along Old GT Road.
Within minutes of the incident being reported, a fleet of fire brigade vehicles from the Maha Kumbh administration rushed to the scene and managed to control the flames.
Chief Fire Officer Pramod Sharma confirmed that the fire, which affected 20 to 22 tents, caused no casualties or injuries. The quick intervention of the fire department was crucial in stopping the fire from spreading further and mitigating any risk to the camp’s residents and surrounding areas.
Upon receiving the alert, Zonal Police Officer of North Jhunsi, Additional SP Sarvesh Kumar Mishra, along with local police and the Mela Magistrate, arrived at the site to assess the situation. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the fire, while the administration continues to urge devotees to stay cautious and report emergencies promptly.
The fire safety response was part of a larger set of extensive preparations made by the Uttar Pradesh government for the Maha Kumbh. To handle emergencies efficiently, the government deployed over 351 firefighting vehicles and 2,000 trained personnel to ensure the safety of millions of devotees at the fairgrounds. Additionally, a network of 4,300 fire hydrants was established to address any unforeseen incidents.
In a bid to strengthen safety measures, the Yogi government invested Rs 131.48 crore in fire safety equipment and resources. This amount includes an allocation of Rs 66.75 crore for fire safety, in addition to the department’s existing Rs 64.73 crore budget.
To further ensure the safety of attendees, the Yogi government set up 50 fire stations and 20 fire posts across the Maha Kumbh grounds.
Each Akhara tent has been equipped with fire-fighting equipment, and multiple mock drills were conducted in collaboration with NDRF and SDRF to enhance emergency preparedness. These proactive measures have proven crucial in maintaining safety and preventing any major incidents.
