Proceedings in both Houses of Parliament came to a close on Saturday, with the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha adjourned indefinitely shortly after convening, signalling the end of the Special Session.
The early adjournment followed a major setback a day earlier, when the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, failed to pass in the Lok Sabha.
The proposed law, which sought to reserve one-third of seats in Parliament for women along with increasing the House’s size, did not secure the constitutionally required two-thirds majority. It received 278 votes in favour and 211 against.
The outcome has intensified the political divide between the ruling National Democratic Alliance and the opposition INDIA bloc.
The government has accused opposition parties of obstructing a significant reform aimed at boosting women’s representation, while the opposition has criticised the linking of the proposal with delimitation and census-related changes.
Following the bill’s rejection, the Centre opted not to introduce two additional measures related to constituency delimitation, indicating that these proposals would not proceed independently.
Leaders of opposition parties gathered at the Parliament office of Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss their next steps, while ruling alliance members also held internal consultations to decide their political strategy.
NDA Plans Public Outreach
Sources indicated that the NDA plans to take the issue to the public through a series of campaigns, including protests, media outreach and social media messaging, aimed at highlighting its position on women’s representation.
A nationwide protest drive is expected to be rolled out, with demonstrations planned across district headquarters and led by the BJP Mahila Morcha.
The developments mark a sharp escalation in the political contest between the two sides, with the debate over women’s reservation and electoral restructuring likely to remain a central issue in the coming months.
