Coimbatore is set for significant movement restrictions and heightened security on Saturday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the city to campaign for the National Democratic Alliance ahead of the Assembly elections.
Officials said the Prime Minister’s schedule includes an evening address to party supporters, where he is likely to push for votes in favour of NDA candidates. The event is likely to draw a large gathering, with senior figures from the Bharatiya Janata Party and allied parties also expected to attend.
To manage the expected influx of people, officials have rolled out a detailed traffic management plan across key parts of the city.
Movement along Avinashi Road and adjoining routes will face tight regulation between 3 PM and 8 PM. Several diversions will affect both incoming and outgoing vehicles.
Long-distance buses and heavy vehicles approaching the city will avoid the usual airport-side entry and use alternative bypass routes. Outbound traffic is moving through inner-city links to ease congestion near the rally zone.
For smaller vehicles, police have mapped out separate diversion corridors to reduce bottlenecks, particularly for those entering from the outskirts. Commuters should expect delays and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
Strict access controls will also be in force at Coimbatore International Airport during the Prime Minister’s movement. Entry of private vehicles to the terminal area will remain halted between 4 PM and 8 PM, and passengers travelling during this window should arrive well in advance.
Those arriving after the cut-off time will need to get down near the airport junction and walk to the terminal. Parking and taxi access within the premises will remain suspended.
Police have urged residents to cooperate with the temporary measures. They said the arrangements are necessary to ensure both public safety and the smooth conduct of the high-profile political event.
