A lower court in Kolkata has remanded Sanjay Roy, the sole arrested suspect in the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, to 14 days of judicial custody.
Roy appeared before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) at Sealdah on Friday afternoon under heavy security. Protesters gathered outside the court, chanting slogans and demanding capital punishment for the accused. Due to the high tension, the hearing was held in the ACJM’s chamber rather than the regular courtroom, and access was restricted to ensure safety.

A large police contingent, led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police, was stationed outside the chamber to maintain order.
While it was confirmed that Roy has been remanded to judicial custody, there was no immediate confirmation on whether the court had approved requests by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for narco-analysis or polygraph tests. Such tests require court approval and the subject’s consent before they can be conducted.
Roy was initially arrested by the Special Investigation Team of Kolkata Police but was later transferred to the CBI following a directive from a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court, which instructed the central agency to take over the investigation.
The case continues to draw significant public and media attention as the investigation progresses.
