Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, has caused controversy by expressing ‘relief’ over the bail granted to Bibhav Kumar. Kumar, a close aide, faces accusations of assaulting former Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal. The assault happened on May 13 at the Chief Minister’s residence.
Sunita Kejriwal posted a photo of Bibhav Kumar on X with the caption ‘Sukoon bhara din’ (a day full of relief). This post showed her satisfaction with the bail decision.
Swati Maliwal, now an AAP Rajya Sabha MP, criticized Sunita Kejriwal’s reaction. Maliwal, who had a fallout with AAP after the assault, shared a screenshot of the post. She challenged AAP’s claims of supporting women’s justice.
Maliwal wrote, “The Chief Minister’s wife, who was at home when I was beaten, feels ‘relieved’ because the man who assaulted me is out on bail.”
Maliwal accused AAP of giving an ‘open license’ to commit crimes against women and then shielding the perpetrators. She added, “This message is clear: assault women, and we will smear the victim and hire top lawyers to protect the attacker.”
Sunita Kejriwal’s post about Bibhav Kumar’s bail is likely to draw public criticism. It also gives the BJP a chance to mock AAP’s claims on women’s justice.
Bibhav Kumar remains the prime accused in the assault case against Swati Maliwal. Although the Supreme Court granted him bail after over 100 days in custody, he still faces charges. Maliwal alleged that Bibhav Kumar attacked and dragged her inside the CM’s residence while Arvind Kejriwal was present.
