The Janata Dal (United) national executive meeting has appointed Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kumar Jha as the party’s working president, while Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will continue as the national president. Jha, who maintains a good relationship with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership, is also the party’s leader in the Rajya Sabha.
This appointment is seen as significant due to Jha’s ability to secure favorable deals from the BJP and maintain amicable relations between the two parties despite their historically tumultuous ties, according to PTI reports.
During the meeting, the JD(U), an ally of the BJP and a major player in the current Lok Sabha, called for strict action against those responsible for exam paper leaks and advocated for a strong law to prevent such incidents. The party also passed a resolution seeking either special category status or a special financial package for Bihar from the central government.

Attendees of the meeting in Delhi included Bihar CM and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar, Union ministers Lalan Singh and Ram Nath Thakur, and other senior leaders from across the country. Nitish Kumar had rejoined the NDA and took oath as Bihar CM with BJP’s support after leaving the alliance and joining the Rashtriya Janata Dal-led ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in August 2022.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, JD(U) contested in alliance with the BJP. The BJP-led NDA performed well, winning 29 out of the 40 seats. Both BJP and JD(U) won 12 seats each, while the LJP (Ram Vilas) secured all five seats it contested. The RJD and Congress won four and three seats, respectively.
