‘Jal Sanchay Abhiyan’ Driving Change Across India: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underscored the importance of water conservation as summer sets in across many parts of the country.

Addressing the 132nd episode of Mann Ki Baat, he called on citizens to renew their commitment to saving water and praised widespread participation in conservation initiatives.

He noted that over the past 11 years, the ‘Jal Sanchay Abhiyan’ has significantly raised awareness, leading to the creation of nearly 50 lakh artificial water harvesting structures nationwide.

He added that villages across India are increasingly taking collective steps to address water scarcity.

The Prime Minister said that efforts such as cleaning traditional ponds and conserving rainwater have gained momentum. Under the ‘Amrit Sarovar Abhiyan’, nearly 70,000 water bodies have been developed, with cleaning activities underway ahead of the monsoon season.

Sharing inspiring examples, he highlighted Wangmun village in Tripura, where residents faced acute water shortages and responded by adopting rooftop rainwater harvesting systems in almost every household.

He said the village has now emerged as a model for sustainable water management.

He also referred to initiatives in the Korea district of Chhattisgarh, where farmers created small recharge ponds and soak pits to retain rainwater, improving groundwater levels.

Similarly, in Mudhigunta village in Telangana, hundreds of families constructed soak pits, forming a collective effort to conserve water.

Emphasising the impact of such initiatives, the Prime Minister said these efforts not only improve groundwater levels but also reduce water-related health issues, demonstrating the power of community action in addressing environmental challenges.
