It Is An Effort To ‘Restore Faith In Law’: Supreme Court As It Appoints Ex Maha DGP For Investigation Of Manipur Violence

Manipur Violence Update: Dattatrey Padsalgikar, an ex-DGP of Maharashtra, was appointed by the Supreme Court on Monday to direct police inquiries into incidents of ethnic violence in Manipur. The highest court declared that its goal is to restore people’s confidence and faith in the legal system. It was suggested that the CBI investigative team be expanded to include five or six deputy SP rank officers from other states to investigate the 11 rape and sexual assault cases, including the naked parade of two women.

Fresh Bench of judges to be formed

A committee of retired high court judges would be formed by the SC bench, which is chaired by CJI D Y Chandrachud, to oversee relief, rehabilitation, and the reconstruction of homes and places of worship. Former chief justice of the J&K high court Gita Mittal will preside over the planned three-person panel, which will also comprise former judges Shalini P Joshi and Asha Menon.

DGP and DIG to direct the investigations

The state’s DGP and DIG will oversee these investigations, according to Attorney General R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s statements before the top court about the probe of ethnic clashes. They provided specifics of the government’s upcoming actions and noted that because of the state’s extremely delicate situation, any externally guided probe will not instill confidence.
