The Central government has disbursed ₹1,162 crore under the Telecom PLI Scheme till 31 March, according to data shared by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Sunday.
Launched on 1 April 2021, the scheme aims to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports. It is set to end with the current financial year.
Of the 42 companies selected, only 21 manufacturers have received the incentives so far.
Jabil Circuit emerged as the top recipient with ₹235.87 crore received over two years. Other major beneficiaries include Flextronics (₹165.12 crore), Nokia (₹157.32 crore), NeoLync Telecommunications (₹142.06 crore), Rising Stars (₹80.33 crore), and Syrma SGS (₹53.23 crore).
Smaller recipients include VVDN Technologies (₹48.37 crore), Sanmina-SCI (₹44.35 crore), Dixon India (₹34.78 crore), and GX India (₹20.91 crore).
As of January 2025, companies under the scheme have invested ₹4,081 crore. This has generated ₹78,672 crore in total sales, including ₹14,963 crore in exports. The scheme has created 26,351 jobs so far.
Two companies — Coral Telecom and Alphion India — were denied incentives for failing to meet eligibility criteria.
A beneficiary company, speaking anonymously, raised concerns over some firms white-labelling imported products instead of manufacturing locally. This practice, they said, erodes margins and violates the scheme’s intent.
Industry experts are calling for stricter monitoring to ensure only genuine manufacturers benefit.
They stressed the need for better alignment between telecom operators and the government’s self-reliance goals. More support for locally valued products, they say, is vital to ensure job creation and real growth.
