India’s ₹48.2 Lakh Crore Tax Surge Reflects Economic Transformation: Dr Rajeshwar Singh

BJP MLA Dr Rajeshwar Singh on Tuesday praised India’s fiscal transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Taking to X, he posted, “Tax collections don’t lie – they reflect real economic momentum.”

“GST collection touching ₹1.84 lakh crore every month is not just a number – it’s the pulse of New India. An economy where transparency, technology, and trust drive progress,” the post read.

He described the surge in tax collection growth as a historic achievement and a reflection of India’s economic strength. From ₹19.75 lakh crore in 2016–17, total tax revenue has grown to ₹48.2 lakh crore in 2024–25—an increase of over 2.4 times in eight years.

Dr Singh stated that this rise shows strong public trust, transparent governance, and effective policy execution by the Centre and Uttar Pradesh governments. He called the Modi government’s reforms a ‘tax revolution’ and said the state’s fiscal model aligns with national goals.

GST, digital reforms drive surge

Dr Singh highlighted the transformative impact of GST since its implementation in July 2017.

GST collections have doubled in five years—from ₹11.37 lakh crore in FY21 to ₹22.08 lakh crore in FY25. The monthly average rose from ₹95,000 crore to ₹1.84 lakh crore during this period.

GST-registered taxpayers increased from 65 lakh in 2017 to 1.51 crore in 2025.

In direct taxes, India collected ₹19.58 lakh crore in 2023–24, a 17.7% growth. Personal income tax reached ₹10.44 lakh crore with 25% growth, while corporate tax hit ₹9.11 lakh crore with 10.26% growth. The taxpayer base expanded from 6.9 crore in 2014 to 15.7 crore in 2024–25.

Dr Rajeshwar Singh said India’s 6.8% tax-to-GDP ratio shows vast untapped potential to further boost revenue and infrastructure development.

Digital India fuels tax compliance

Dr Singh credited the growth to reforms such as e-invoicing, e-way bills, faceless assessments, and AI-based analytics. He said these tools improved compliance and transparency. The result: stronger revenue, reduced evasion, and better governance.

Higher collections enable investments in defence, Digital India, AI cities, education, and welfare. He explained that the system now promotes formalisation, efficient tax filing, and nationwide equity.

“Tax collection growth reflects the strength of our economy, the trust of citizens, and the success of bold reforms,” he said. “It’s not just economic data—it’s proof of New India.”

Dr Rajeshwar Singh concluded, “Under the leadership of PM Modi and CM Yogi, India has created a transparent, self-reliant, and forward-looking tax system that will fuel rapid development.”
