Several Indians discharged from Russian Army: MEA
In response to recent reports highlighting the presence of Indian nationals serving in the Russian Army, the Indian authorities have taken swift action to ensure the discharge of several individuals from their military obligations. The External Affairs Ministry issued a statement addressing what it termed as “inaccurate” media reports regarding Indians seeking assistance for discharge from the Russian Army.
The statement clarified that Russian authorities have vigorously pursued cases brought to the attention of the Indian Embassy in Moscow. While specific details regarding the number of individuals discharged or still serving remain undisclosed, it is acknowledged that numerous Indians have already been relieved from their military duties.
Reports had earlier indicated that up to 100 Indian nationals might be serving within the Russian Army, with concerns emerging about their welfare amidst the Russia-Ukraine conflict. India, as a matter of top priority, reaffirmed its commitment to actively pursue relevant cases for an expedited discharge from the Russian military.
The recent advisory urging Indian citizens to steer clear of entanglement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict stemmed from reports suggesting Indian nationals, initially recruited for support roles, were coerced into combat alongside Russian forces. Amidst such reports, there were unconfirmed accounts of casualties and fatalities among Indian nationals.

In response to appeals for intervention, efforts were made by All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi, Karnataka government officials, and concerned relatives to engage the External Affairs Ministry for repatriation of affected individuals, particularly those from Karnataka, Telangana, and Jammu and Kashmir.
Reports have suggested that Indian nationals were recruited by private military companies, such as the Wagner Group, purportedly to participate in military operations against Ukraine. This situation mirrors earlier reports of Nepalese nationals also being recruited for service in the Russian military, with confirmed casualties among them.
As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, with its devastating toll on civilian populations, the international community remains vigilant. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has documented a significant number of civilian casualties, underscoring the urgency for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
