General Upendra Dwivedi, the newly appointed Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), outlined a vision of transformation and self-reliance for the Indian Army during his inaugural address on Monday.
Taking charge of his predecessor, General Pande, who retired after more than four decades of service, General Dwivedi emphasized the Army’s preparedness to confront current and future security challenges.
In a ceremony marked by tradition and solemnity at South Block, General Dwivedi received a Guard of Honour before addressing the media.

He expressed profound pride in assuming leadership of the Indian Army, underscoring its storied legacy of courage and sacrifice.
General Dwivedi paid tribute to fallen heroes. He stated, “The valor and sacrifices of our soldiers steep our traditions in honor. Leading this esteemed institution is an immense privilege for me.”
Acknowledging the evolving geopolitical landscape and technological advancements, General Dwivedi stressed the need for the Army to adapt swiftly.
He underscored his commitment to enhancing the Army’s operational capabilities through advanced weaponry and indigenous technologies.
“Our path to transformation includes a commitment to self-reliance. We will prioritize indigenous initiatives and integrate maximum domestically produced war systems,” General Dwivedi affirmed, outlining his strategy for bolstering national defense capabilities.
In alignment with national security imperatives, General Dwivedi further pledged to ensure seamless coordination among the Army, Navy, Air Force, and other stakeholders.
He reaffirmed his dedication to safeguarding India’s interests and contributing to the nation’s development goals, echoing the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
“My foremost priority is the welfare of our personnel, veterans, and their families. Their well-being remains a sacred commitment,” General Dwivedi assured, highlighting his focus on enhancing support systems for Army personnel and their extended families.
General Upendra Dwivedi, an esteemed military leader with a distinguished 40-year career, graduated from Sainik School in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh.
Commissioned into the Regiment of Jammu & Kashmir Rifles in 1984, his leadership however is likely to steer the Indian Army through its transformative journey, ensuring readiness to address multifaceted security challenges in the years ahead.
