On Monday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on the Central government, condemning the implementation of three new criminal laws as a threat to parliamentary democracy.
Kharge, speaking on behalf of the INDIA bloc, vowed to resist what he termed as “bulldozer justice” imposed by the ruling BJP.
In a statement issued, Kharge accused Prime Minister Modi and the BJP of disregarding democratic norms by pushing through legislation without proper parliamentary debate.
Kharge asserted, “After the electoral setback, Modi and the BJP feigned respect for the Constitution, but their actions speak louder than words.”
The three laws in question, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam aim to replace the antiquated British-era statutes governing criminal justice in India.
While proponents argue that these changes will modernize the justice system, critics, including opposition parties, have voiced strong objections.
Kharge, speaking on behalf of the INDIA bloc, emphasized their commitment to upholding parliamentary procedures.
“INDIA will not allow this ‘Bulldozer Justice’ to disrupt our democratic institutions,” he declared, underscoring their resolve to challenge what they view as a unilateral imposition of laws.
The Ministry of Home Affairs, following the notification of these laws on 25 December 2023, has initiated extensive preparations to facilitate their implementation.
These efforts include raising awareness among law enforcement agencies, legal professionals, and the public at large.
The debate over these new laws is likely to intensify in the coming weeks, with opposition parties gearing up for a potential showdown in Parliament.
As political tensions escalate, the future of India’s criminal justice system hangs in the balance amidst fervent public discourse and parliamentary maneuvering.
