Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday voiced serious anxiety over the intensifying crisis in West Asia and reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to peace and regional stability.
He stressed that New Delhi will remain actively engaged with governments across the region to safeguard Indian nationals.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, PM Modi underscored India’s principled diplomatic stance.
He declared that India consistently advocates restraint, dialogue and stability amid global tensions. He added that when two democracies stand together, their collective appeal for peace gains greater resonance.
Prime Minister Modi stated that the deteriorating conditions in West Asia deeply trouble India.
He emphasised that disputes must find resolution through constructive dialogue and sustained diplomacy.
PM Modi assured that India will coordinate closely with regional partners to ensure the protection and security of Indian citizens residing in Gulf nations.
The remarks follow a sharp escalation in the Middle East. The confrontation began after coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel targeted Iran’s missile systems and broader military infrastructure.
The initial wave reportedly eliminated senior members of Iran’s leadership, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Tehran responded swiftly with drone and missile attacks aimed at American assets, regional capitals and allied forces across the Gulf.
Escalation Across the Gulf
Iran’s retaliatory campaign extended across multiple countries. Defence systems intercepted missiles and drones over Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
Ofiicials imposed temporary airspace restrictions. Both civilian and military casualties have been reported.
In response, US forces initiated counter-operations, including naval deployments.
The standoff marks one of the gravest confrontations between Washington and Tehran in recent decades.
On Sunday, the Cabinet Committee on Security convened under PM Modi’s leadership.
Officials briefed the committee on the February 28 air strikes in Iran and the subsequent regional escalation.
The review also assessed the safety of the sizeable Indian expatriate community.
The official statement confirmed that the committee expressed grave concern regarding the well-being of Indian nationals in the affected region.
