India on Saturday summoned Iran’s Ambassador, Mohammad Fathali, after an incident involving Indian-flagged vessels coming under fire in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) raised concerns with Tehran following reports that gunboats belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired at ships transiting the region.

One of the vessels targeted is believed to be a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC).

Despite the firing, both the tanker and its crew were reported safe. India is understood to have lodged a strong protest over the episode.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Centre earlier confirmed that a tanker was fired upon by IRGC gunboats northeast of Oman.

According to UKMTO alerts, the vessel was approached by two gunboats without prior communication before shots were fired. No casualties or major damage were reported.

In a separate development, another UKMTO alert later in the day indicated that a container ship in the same region was struck by an unidentified projectile, causing damage to some containers. No fire or environmental impact was reported, and investigations are ongoing.

Authorities have advised vessels in the area to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.

Iran Asserts Control Over Strait of Hormuz

Amid the incidents, Iran announced that control over the Strait of Hormuz has reverted to its previous operational state, citing ongoing tensions linked to a US naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Officials stated that Iranian armed forces strictly control the waterway. They said the control will continue. It will remain in place until restrictions on vessel movement involving Iran are lifted.

Iranian authorities also accused the United States of repeated violations and maritime misconduct.

Shipping data indicated disruptions in maritime traffic. Around 10 vessels reportedly reversed course near Larak Island, a key monitoring point for Iran. This highlighted growing uncertainty in one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.
