India’s Ministry of Defence announced on Friday that it has finalized a USD 248 million deal with Russia’s Rosoboronexport for the procurement of 1,000 HP engines for its T-72 tanks. This significant agreement aims to bolster the Indian Army’s tank fleet capabilities and enhance its overall combat readiness.
The contract, valued at approximately Rs 2,156 crore, includes the procurement of the engines in ‘fully formed, completely knocked down, and semi-knocked down conditions.’ This arrangement will allow for the assembly of the engines in India, further advancing local manufacturing capabilities.

In addition to the engine supply, the deal also features a transfer of technology (ToT) from Rosoboronexport to India’s state-run Armoured Vehicles Nigam Ltd (AVNL) based in Avadi, Chennai. Under the agreement, AVNL will integrate and produce the engines locally, supporting India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative within the defence sector. This marks a significant step toward enhancing India’s self-reliance in military equipment production.
The T-72 tanks, a cornerstone of the Indian Army’s armoured fleet, currently operate with 780 HP engines. Upgrading these tanks with the new 1,000 HP engines will significantly improve their mobility and offensive capabilities, particularly on the battlefield.
The Ministry of Defence highlighted that this enhancement will enable the tanks to operate more effectively in challenging conditions and increase the overall strength of the Indian Army’s armoured units.
This deal is a part of India’s broader efforts to modernize its military equipment and ensure self-sufficiency in defence production. By integrating more advanced technology and local production, India aims to reduce reliance on foreign imports and strengthen its defence manufacturing base.
The procurement and technology transfer agreement underscore India’s commitment to enhancing its defence capabilities while also advancing the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which seeks to foster indigenous defence manufacturing.
