India Issues Advisory As Protests In Nepal Turn Deadly Over Social Media Ban

Tensions erupted across Nepal following the government’s sudden decision to block 26 social media and messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and others.

The country’s youth immediately protested the ban enforced under new registration rules, viewing it as an attack on freedom of expression.

The protests, initially peaceful, escalated rapidly. Demonstrators in Kathmandu and several other major cities clashed with police, leading to the use of teargas, rubber bullets, and in some cases, live ammunition.

According to official reports, at least 19 people have lost their lives, and many more have sustained injuries.

India Responds: Advisory and Condolences

In response to the unrest, India’s Ministry of External Affairs released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the violence.

The MEA extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, many of whom were reportedly young demonstrators.

“We are closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. We also wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured,” the statement said.

India urged its citizens in Nepal to exercise caution and follow local guidelines, particularly in areas under curfew.

Facing intense pressure, the Nepalese government has now lifted the social media ban.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli described the protests as ‘deeply unfortunate’ and announced the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the violence.

He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives during the protest and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families and relatives who lost their loved ones in the tragic incident.

The Prime Minister also announced compensation and medical support for those affected.

India has urged all parties in Nepal to exercise restraint and resolve differences through dialogue. As a close neighbour, India reaffirmed its support for democratic processes and peaceful engagement.

International organisations, including the United Nations, have also expressed concern over the situation, highlighting the importance of protecting civil liberties and ensuring responsible governance during times of unrest.

The Indian government has strongly advised its nationals in Nepal to stay updated with local announcements and avoid large gatherings, as the situation remains tense.
